The 4th amendment is pretty much gone in USA, especially when it comes to your vehicle. Searching of your belongings is very routine now at sports events, even at the High School level. Although they use the excuse of looking for bombs, guns,contraband like booze, etc. its actually for looking for food and soft drinks because they dont want you bringing in stuff. They want you to pay the exuberant prices for the food and such at the event.

Freedom of assembly has been knocked back with "exclusion zones". you can only assemble where and when the people in power want you to.

Freedom of speech has been knocked back with "free speech zones".

Habeas Corpus has been under fire too.

The list goes on. As a postnote, I feel more free outside the USA.

The USA is freer by most people's yardstick. Freedom of speech, independent judiciary, the right to fair trial, oh yeah and democracy. A Chinese mayor is as far as I'm aware, not elected. A recent BBc documentary followed the previous mayor of Datong for a few months as he worked. He shouted and screamed at his subordinates like a man who is untouchable. I could argue against your points above but i usually find blind anti-americanism or self loathers are fixed in their mindset. the roots of this are usually psychological.

In saying that though China is a lot freer and more moderate than portrayed in the western press. It is an attitude if you don't bother us we won't bother you. I also sometimes wonder if democracies are the best solution. Being free does not mean you will be happy. For instance if you want to build something like a new bridge, in a democracy it ll get passed around from sub committee to sub committee and might not get built. in china this is no problem You want to build a new superspeed railway to shanghai airport. fine. a party member can just snap his fingers.In china anti social behaviour will get dealt with at the end of a police baton, as it should.
